United Methodist Women

PURPOSE for UMW

The organized unit of UNITED METHODIST WOMEN shall be - a community of women whose purpose is to know God - and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ;  - to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; - and to expand concepts of missions through participation in the global ministries of the church.

The United Methodist Women, UMW, is the women's mission organization of The United Methodist Church. The women of the church meet in "circles" with areas of interest and support of missions being the main goal. Christian  Christian fellowship and support to one another are the built-in perks of participating in UMW circles. The "circles" have different meeting schedules and age ranges but all the women come together as a unit for four meetings a year with a guest speaker.

Garrett County is part of the West Virginia Conference and there are local unit goals established at that level. The vision statement reads "UMW doing mission by changing lives one at a time".  The mission statement reads "UMW working together providing mission opportunities for the well-being of women, children and youth locally and globally".

When a member of the UMW enters the Church Triumphant, a book will be purchased and placed in the Church Library as a memorial to the departed person.  Martha DeBerry, Church Librarian and UMW Secretary of Program Resources, will be glad to receive your suggestions for memorial books.

All women are invited to join in the vision and work of the UMW.

Women's Circles

The women of the church are a dedicated group who embrace the love of God as they work together to respond to the needs of His children both locally and abroad.

At one time women who joined the Methodist Church were automatically a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. In 1968, with the merger of the Methodist and the Evangelical United Brethren churches to become the United Methodist Church, that changed. Today, membership is open to anyone who supports the concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

At St. Paul's-Oakland there are three sub-groups of the Unit. Ruth Circle meets March (if possible) through November at 1:30 p.m. in the Wesley Parlor; Susanna Circle meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in members' homes; Sew Crafty Ladies meet on Monday mornings at 9:30 in the Sew Crafty Ladies room on the lower level of the education building. The welcome mat is out and they look forward to your joining them for Christian fellowship.

Please ask someone new to join us.
The UMW Reading Program Leads to Action!

For 140 years, members of United Methodist Women and predecessor organizations have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women members to:
Expand understanding of and participation in God's mission.
Increase sensitivity to all human beings-their needs, interests and concerns.
Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today.
Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life.
Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge.
Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission.

BACK PACK MINISTRY

Our Backpack Ministry enables children to have school supplies when they begin the school year. Our backpacks bring smiling faces and grateful hearts. This ministry makes a difference in someone's day. A special thank you to Sue Damon who has very successfully coordinated this project every year and to those who purchase the needed supplies and pack the backpacks. As always, none of this would happen without the caring support of the St. Paul's church family and Pennies for Mission contributions.

The United Methodist Women thank you and the community for your support of soup sale endeavors held throughout the year. All proceeds benefit others in our community through more than twelve organizations we help support annually. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE

Operation Christmas Child: The United Methodist Women would like to thank everyone for their support of Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, has touched the lives of millions of hurting children since 1993 by distributing gift-filled shoe boxes and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ in crisis areas of the world. Thank you to each one of you!
